Places to visit in Domogled - Valea Cernei National Park, Romania
The National Park was established in 1990 and has an area of 610 sq km, making it one of the largest in Romania. Most of it is in Banat-Crisana while the eastern edge is in Oltenia region. The valley of Cerna Valley occupies most of its territory. Godeanu Mountains are the most impressing geographical feature of the area. There are around 30 tourist trails available, some of them designed for the unexperienced trekker while some are for professionals. The chamois, the lynx, and the bear found a home in this area. There's also an information point availble, located in the camping area close to Baile Herculane. Domogled-Cerna Valley National Park is neighbored by an other National Park, Retezat, accesible from the Jiu-Cerna pass, close to the town Petrosani (50 km northeast).
Cerna RiverCerna has its source Godeanu Mountains and flows into the Danube. The upper reach of the river is sometimes called Cernisoara River. It is 84 km long and it carves an erosive tectonic valley with numerous gorges, quite deep sometimes. There is a man-made lake on it (Tierna), just before it crosses the Baile Herculane spa.
Godeanu MountainsGodeanu belongs to the Western part of the Transylvanian Alps. The maximum altitude is 2.284, at Gugu; there 5 more peaks higher than 2.000m. These mountains have a long tradition as shepherds area, a reason why the mountains are inhabited up to a very high altitude. There are no chalets and no touristic facilities in Godeanu, so the area fits the professional trekker.
