The city is located in Moldavia on Milcov river, 10 km north-west of Focsani, close to the border with Wallachia.
Rural at first, Odobesti slowly evolved into an urban center famous for its vineyards and "the royal cellar" unique in Romania. It is called "the wine town" because it has the largest number of cellars in the country. The town is in the heart of the most intense seismic area of Romania, the Vrancea area.

"Beciul Domnesc" Royal Cellar
...has the largest wine collection in Romania, with over 100,000 bottles (the cellars in Moldova Republic are much larger than the Romanian ones). It was built during the reign of Stephen the Great, the most important king of Moldavia, in the 16th century. It was rebuild in the 1830s.
