Bukovina area, the north-western corner of Moldavia; a former province of Austria, Bukovina is now divided between Romania and Ukraine. The city of Suceava is the main urban center in the area. Probota is a small village incorporated into the newly-born (formerly village) town of Dolhasca.

Probota Monastery ...was built starting 1530 by the Moldavian leader Petru Rareş, the one who initiated the artistic movement regarding the outside painting of the monasteris. Petru Rares was the son of the most important Moldavian leader of all times, Stephan the Great, and his tomb is located in the church. The name Probota comes from the Slavic word meaning "brothership".
